Velux Window Installation & Replacement in Swindon, Wiltshire & Bristol

Velux Installers With Local Experience Across Wiltshire & the South West

GWR Roofing Ltd installs, replaces and repairs Velux roof windows across Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and Bristol. Velux windows bring natural light and ventilation into loft spaces, upper floors and rooms that lack adequate window area — and they are one of the most common upgrades we carry out as part of loft conversions, re-roofing projects and general property improvements.

We fit the full range of Velux products: centre-pivot windows for standard pitched roofs, top-hung windows where a clear opening is needed, flat roof skylights for extensions and single-storey roofs, and electric and solar-powered windows for hard-to-reach positions. Every installation includes the correct Velux flashing kit for your roof type (tile, slate or flat), internal lining and proper sealing to ensure the window is weathertight and insulated from day one.

Whether you need a single Velux window fitted into an existing roof slope or multiple windows as part of a loft conversion, our team handles the full installation — including cutting the opening, fitting trimmers to the rafters, installing the window and re-tiling or re-slating around it.

Velux Window Services in Swindon, Wiltshire & Bristol

Roof Windows for Loft Conversions, Extensions & Existing Roof Spaces

GWR Roofing Ltd carries out the full range of Velux window work — from new installations and like-for-like replacements to repairs on existing roof windows. Below is a breakdown of the services we offer.

Velux window installed in a loft conversion on a semi-detached house

New Velux Window Installations

We install new Velux windows into existing pitched roofs, loft conversions, new builds and extensions. The work involves cutting an opening in the roof slope, fitting structural trimmers between the rafters, installing the window with the correct Velux flashing kit for your roof type (slate, tile or flat), and re-tiling or re-slating around it. Internally, we fit the Velux lining kit and ensure the window is sealed, insulated and ready to use.

Velux Window Replacements

Older Velux windows — particularly those from the 1980s and 1990s — often develop problems including misted double glazing, failed seals, stiff or broken opening mechanisms, and leaks around the flashing. We carry out like-for-like replacements using current Velux models that fit the existing opening, along with new flashing kits. In most cases a replacement can be completed within a day without the need for scaffold.

Flat Roof Velux Windows & Skylights

Velux produces a range of flat roof windows and dome skylights designed for extensions, single-storey roofs and flat-roofed dormers. These units sit flush with the flat roof surface and are sealed with a purpose-built kerb and membrane upstand. We install flat roof Velux windows as part of new flat roof installations, GRP replacements and existing flat roof upgrades — bringing natural light into kitchens, bathrooms and hallways that would otherwise rely entirely on artificial lighting.

Velux Window Repairs & Maintenance

Common Velux window problems include leaks caused by deteriorated flashing, misted or blown double-glazed units, stiff or broken hinges, and condensation caused by failed seals. We repair and replace individual components — including flashing kits, glazing units, handles and hinges — where a full window replacement is not necessary. If the window frame itself is damaged or the unit is too old for parts to be available, we will recommend a replacement instead.

Velux Window Installation FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about our roofing services? Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions from our customers.

Velux is the leading manufacturer of roof windows — the name has become a generic term for any roof window in much the same way as "Hoover" for vacuum cleaners. Velux windows are fitted into the slope of a pitched roof (or into a flat roof using a dedicated flat roof unit) to bring natural daylight and ventilation into loft spaces, upper floors and rooms below flat roofs. They are available in a wide range of sizes, with centre-pivot, top-hung, electric and solar-powered opening options.

A Velux window brings natural daylight into spaces that would otherwise be dark, improves ventilation (which helps reduce condensation and moisture build-up), and can add usable floor area by making a loft space feel more open and liveable. Modern Velux windows are double-glazed with low-emissivity coatings for energy efficiency, and they can be specified with blinds, insect screens and noise-reduction glazing where needed.

The cost depends on the window size, the type of opening mechanism, your roof type and whether any structural alterations are needed. As a rough guide, a single centre-pivot Velux window supplied and fitted into an existing pitched roof — including the flashing kit, internal lining and making good the tiles around it — typically costs between £800 and £1,500 in the Swindon and Wiltshire area. Electric and solar-powered models, larger sizes and flat roof units will be higher. We provide free fixed-price quotes after assessing your roof.

Modern Velux windows are double-glazed as standard, with low-emissivity glass coatings and argon gas fill between the panes to reduce heat loss. They carry an energy rating and are designed to meet current Building Regulations for thermal performance. Compared to older single-glazed or early double-glazed roof windows, a new Velux window will significantly reduce heat loss through the roof opening.

Velux produces windows for pitched roofs (with a minimum pitch of around 15°, depending on the model) and flat roof units for roofs with a pitch of 0° to 15°. They can be installed into slate, tile, flat felt, GRP and metal roofs — each uses a different flashing kit designed for that specific roof covering. In practice, we can fit a Velux window into the majority of roof types found across Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and Bristol.

The main options are centre-pivot (the most common — the window rotates around a central hinge for cleaning and ventilation), top-hung (hinged at the top for a clear opening, suited to lower installations where you want an unobstructed view), electric (opened and closed by a wired motor with a wall switch or remote control), and solar-powered (battery-powered motor charged by an integrated solar panel — no wiring needed, ideal for hard-to-reach positions). We can advise which type suits your room and roof during the quote visit.

A single Velux window installation — including cutting the opening, fitting trimmers, installing the window and flashing kit, and re-tiling around it — typically takes one day. If scaffold is needed for access, this is usually erected the day before. Multiple windows on the same roof may take an additional day. Replacement of an existing Velux window with a new unit in the same opening is usually quicker — often half a day.

It is possible if you have roofing experience, but we would not recommend it as a DIY job. The work involves cutting rafters, fitting structural trimmers, correctly installing the window and flashing kit, and ensuring a weathertight seal with the surrounding tiles or slates. An incorrectly fitted Velux window will leak — and the damage caused by a persistent leak around a roof window can be significant. Professional installation also ensures compliance with Building Regulations where applicable.

Velux windows are low-maintenance. The glass can be cleaned from inside the room by rotating the centre-pivot sash 180°. The external finish (either painted wood or polyurethane-coated) does not need repainting. The main maintenance point is to check the flashing seal and surrounding tiles periodically — particularly after heavy storms — and to clear any debris that has collected in the gutter or flashing channels around the window frame.
